How to Navigate Life's Ups and Downs, and Other Confounding Scenarios

This "one woman" stand-up presentation is about finding solutions from the lessons of survival, and our own abilities to face the unbearable landscape and climate of that survival. A remarkable personal perspective of one's yearning for the right to exist while at the same time making something out of nothing. This stand-up presentation tells a story about beating the odds growing up Deaf, Hispanic, and surviving a dozen foster homes before finally finding one's rightful place in the world. If you are a parent, educator, policy maker, or simply concerned about the welfare of young socio-economically disadvantaged children, this presentation is for you.

Presentation 2

How Are You Going to Get a Ph.D. If You Can't Hear?

This informative presentation is from a student advocacy perspective, intended for non-traditional students as well as those who have additional barriers, such as a disability and/or coming from culturally diverse ethnic backgrounds. In making the challenges of the unwritten rules of doctoral study more explicit, the information is insightful rather than scientific, personal rather than objective, and practical rather than theoretical. Many first-hand incidents and experiences provide the inspiration for this valuable presentation which serves to pave the way for individuals who want to earn academe's highest reward, the doctoral degree, in their chosen field of study.

Length: 2.0 hours

Cost: $1200.00

Presentation 3

It's Not About Being Different That Matters, But What You Do With It that Counts!

In response to the enormous demands of educating a child with a disability, this educational workshop tries to make explicit many of the unvoiced institutional expectations that distinguish learning of students with disabilities from other experiences in education and provides some coping strategies to reduce the ambiguities that trouble most parents, educators and policy makers. the presenter serves as a kind of "educational mentor" to help you meet the challenges ahead with a minimum of stress and even enjoy yourself along the way. Despite the grim picture that people like to paint of raising and/or working with children with disabilities, it is possible that some can perform at exceptional levels academically. Based on both personal and professional experiences working with many of these successful young students and their families, the presenter provides a wealth of information about how and why these individuals have succeeded - what motivates them, how their backgrounds and family relationships have shaped them, even how it feels to be a high academic achiever. The challenges of transition from school to work, from maintaining self-esteem to making the right choices about their professional and personal lives is also discussed. Most importantly, this workshop offers specific and inspiring examples of the practices, attitudes, and teaching strategies that have enabled these students to persevere and triumph, including the presenter's own "trial by fire" schooling experiences.

Length: 2.5 hours

Cost: $1500.00
